CMS Announces Participants in BPCI Advanced and Releases Evaluation Report for BPCI Initiative

KentuckyOne Health Partners (KHP) has been successfully managing orthopedic episodes since 2015. Average length of stay in the hospital, and when necessary, skilled nursing home stays have reduced 50%, while patient satisfaction, physician satisfaction, quality scores and average total medical Spend all improved. CMS is now shifting to the “Advanced” model of episodes in the Bundled Payments for Care Improvement (BPCI) Initiative. KentuckyOne Health will participate in the Congestive Heart Failure episode in 2019.

“Episodes-of-care provide an opportunity to introduce providers and hospitals to new methods of managing quality and total medical spend,” said Amy O’Connell RN, MSN, APRN-BC, Chief Advanced Practice Officer for KHP. “Given our previous five years of success managing episodes-of-care and two-sided risk, KHP is ready to share our experiences improving patient satisfaction, provider quality and improving care for Congestive Heart Failure patients.”

Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced the new participants in the Bundled Payments for Care Improvement (BPCI) Advanced model. The Model participants include 832 Acute Care Hospitals and 715 Physician Group Practices – a total of 1,547 Medicare providers and suppliers, located in 49 states plus Washington, D.C. and Puerto Rico. The model runs from October 1, 2018 through December 31, 2023.

CMS also released the fifth evaluation report for Models 2-4 of the original BPCI initiative. Overall, Medicare fee-for-service (FFS) payments decreased, but net Medicare spending increased due to reconciliation payments made to program participants being higher than the decline in FFS payments. Quality of care was maintained.
